About the show
Hit Broadway dance musical An American In Paris premieres at London’s Dominion Theatre.
Audiences across the Atlantic have been wowed by dance-filled musical An American In Paris since 2015. The up-beat and romantic musical comes to the West End after scooping four Tony Awards.
The musical is based on the 1951 Oscar-winning film of the same name. Its toe-tapping quality is owed to the music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin. Classic hits including I Got Rhythm, ‘S Wonderful and They Can’t Take That Away From Me all win a place in the score.
An American In Paris is set in post-war Paris. Jerry Mulligan chooses France as a good place to forget the war and start on his dream of being a painter. Wealthy American Milo Davenport, who is also hoping to leave the past behind, is there to assist him. One day, Jerry meets Lise, a lovely Parisian shop girl also hiding her own secret. Things get complicated when it becomes clear Jerry isn’t the only one interested in Lise. He’s got competition.
Christopher Wheeldon directs and choreographs the award-winning show. Fans of London’s own Royal Ballet, where Wheeldon both trained as a dancer and continues to produced work, will not be surprised to hear that one of those awards was for Best Choreography.
Along with the show itself, the two Tony nominated leads are also leaping lightly across to London. Britain’s own Leanne Cope, who was previously a First Artist of the Royal Ballet, plays Lise Dassin. Robert Fairchild, a New York City Ballet Principal Dancer, joins her in the role of Jerry Mulligan. Jane Asher, Haydn Oakley, Zoë Rainey, David Seadon-Young and Ashley Day join them in the hit dance musical.
Originally a Théâtre du Châtelet show before becoming a Broadway success, it’s now the turn of London to wave the stars and stripes alongside the tricolor.
An American In Paris runs at the Dominion Theatre from 4 March – 27 January 2018.
