About the show
Celebrate the life of legend Judy Garland in the musical Judy! at the Arts Theatre.
Judy! is the remarkable musical charting the life and times of Judy Garland. Ray Rackham wrote and directs Judy!, which started life as a show called Through The Mill. That show premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in 2015. It now returns to the London stage with a West End run at the intimate Arts Theatre.
The plot flits between three different versions of Judy. Young Judy is a naïve girl on the cusp of life-changing success with her performance in The Wizard Of Oz. Palace Theatre Judy is a woman at the peak of her career, winning over the crowds whilst also enjoying romance with Sidney Luft. CBS Judy is an older woman attempting to re-establish her name and win back the public’s affections.
Far from the image of the little girl in a gingham dress, Judy! makes clear the stresses and strains that fame places on iconic figures, especially female performers in the 20th century.
Helen Sheals plays CBS Judy. She starred in previous TV hits including Last Tango In Halifax and Downton Abbey. Belinda Wollaston, seen on stage in Mamma Mia!, plays Palace Theatre Judy, while Lucy Penrose is cast as Young Judy.
The show’s live band performs a host of Garland standards. These stretch from less familiar songs like The Man That Got Away to the well-known heart-wrenching Over The Rainbow. Judy! is a chance to rethink what you think you know about an icon.
Judy! runs at the Arts Theatre from 16 May – 17 June 2017.
