About the show
Opera North’s sparkling production of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate comes to the London Coliseum.
Cole Porter’s behind-the-scenes musical, Kiss Me, Kate, is performed at the London Coliseum by Opera North. A full scale orchestra and the chorus of Opera North bring the jazz-infused musical to life. Jo Davies directs and James Holmes conducts.
With book by Samuel and Bella Spewack, Kiss Me, Kate first opened on Broadway in 1948. It’s 1940s Baltimore and we’re at the opening night of a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew. It soon becomes clear that there’s as much comedy and passion happening offstage as there is on it.
Tensions start to rise when actor-manager Fred Graham comes into contact with his leading lady (and ex-wife) Lilli Vanessi. Added to the mix is Lois Lane, the woman Fred now has his eye on. And her gambler boyfriend Bill. With a few more gangsters on hand to cause trouble, the scene is set for sparks to fly.
Kiss Me, Kate features the hit songs Another Op’nin’ Another Show, Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Always True To You In My Fashion and Too Darn Hot.
The Telegraph calls the production “irresistible”. The Guardian says the show is “so hot it’s practically a fire-risk.” The Arts Desk describes it as “a sizzling new production”.
Filled with mischief and mayhem, Kiss Me, Kate is guaranteed to light up the London Coliseum. In short: wunderbar!
Kiss Me, Kate runs at the London Coliseum from 20 – 30 June 2018.
