About the show
Audra McDonald makes her long-awaited West End debut in Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill at Wyndham’s Theatre.
Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill is a musical in the true sense of the word. The songs are at the heart of the work. They pay fitting tribute to a female vocalist regarded as one of the best that ever lived, Billie Holiday. Audiences are treated to tracks including God Bless The Child and What A Little Moonlight Can Do. Also Strange Fruit, Crazy He Calls Me and Taint Nobody’s Biz-ness.
Lady Day premiered in 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia. It subsequently had its Broadway debut in 2014. Lanie Robertson wrote the story, which is set one day in March 1959. Tragically close to her untimely death, Billie Holiday performs a selection of songs in a shabby bar. The soulful music is interspersed with stories of her turbulent life.
Multi-award winner Audra McDonald performs the title role Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill at Wyndham’s Theatre. Mcdonald won her first Tony Award just one year after graduating from the Julliard School. That accolade was for her performance in Carousel. Other awards followed for productions including Master Class and Ragtime. The entrancing singer and actress was due to bring Lady Day to Wyndham’s for summer 2016. But the star’s pregnancy meant the production had to be rescheduled for a year later.
The wait through, will surely be worth it. Filling the shoes of one of the world’s best-ever jazz performers is a tough job. But if there is one person who can probably be trusted to do the jazz legend justice, it is a woman who has won a whopping six Tony awards in her own right.
Lonnie Price directs the production.
Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill runs at Wyndham’s Theatre from 17 June – 9 September 2017.
