About the show
Join an aspiring writer as he composes a hit musical in tick, tick… BOOM! at Park Theatre.
The life of a creative can be hard. While those around you start to settle down with better-paying jobs, houses and security, you’re still ploughing away trying to come up with the next modern masterpiece. This was exactly the position that composer and writer Jonathan Larson found himself in shortly before hitting the big time with his musical Rent, an updated version of Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème.
This lesser-known autobiographical rock musical using book, lyrics and music by Larson, chronicles the writer’s commitment to making art no matter what the cost.
In tick, tick… BOOM! the character of Jon is waiting tables to make ends meet while he keeps working at composing a musical. His girlfriend is eager to get married, and wants to move out of the city. Other friends are making big bucks working on Madison Avenue, adding another question mark to Jon’s life choices.
Set in 1990, tick, tick… BOOM! is essentially about what happens when you try to hold on to your dreams despite all that life throws at you.
Chris Jenkins plays Jonathan in the production. He previously appeared in The Burnt Part Boys at Park Theatre. Jordan Shaw, who counts Miss Saigon and The Scottsboro Boys among his credits, also stars. Gillian Saker completes the cast.
The hard work and determination of the real Jonathan Larson did pay off. His musical Rent went on to have a Broadway run and build an army of devoted fans. It also won a Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize. It was recently revived for a 20th anniversary production at the St James Theatre (now The Other Palace) in London. Larson, however, tragically died the day before its off-Broadway premiere.
tick, tick… BOOM! runs at the Park Theatre from 3 – 27 May 2017.
