About the show
The European Premiere of Stephen Schwartz’s musical Working at the Southwark Playhouse.
London’s Southwark Playhouse stages the European premiere of Working. This genre-defying musical is by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso with additional contributions by Gordon Greenberg. The Academy Award-winning Schwartz is the man behind mega hit musical Wicked, and also Godspell.
And that’s not where the big names stop. James Taylor, a five-time Grammy Award winner, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, also contributed to the show. Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers provide additional songs, as does Susan Birkenhead .
Based on a book of interviews with the US workforce by Studs Terkel, Working gives voice to the ordinary American worker. The schoolteacher, the housewife, the fireman and the waitress all let the audience know what it’s like to be them. The musical received its Broadway premiere at the 46th Street Theatre in 1978 with a cast featuring Patti LuPone.
Luke Sheppard directs Working. He previously worked on Miranda’s In The Heights when it played at the Southwark Playhouse and the King’s Cross Theatre. Fabian Aloise, the Associate Choreographer for the Australian production of Matilda the Musical, provides the choreography.
Cast members include Gillian Bevan, whose stage credits feature Cymbeline for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Into the Woods at the Manchester Royal Exchange. She is joined by Krysten Cummings who starred in Rent on Broadway and in the West End, and also Dean Chisnall, recently in the UK tour of Blood Brothers.
Other cast members include Siubhan Harrison (Guys And Dolls in the West End), Peter Polycarpou (City Of Angels at the Donmar Warehouse) and also Liam Tamne (Rocky Horror Picture Show UK tour).
Working runs at the Southwark Playhouse from 2 June – 8 July 2017.
