About the show
Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein gets a new lease of life in the West End!
Hilarious monster musical Young Frankenstein brings Transylvanian horror and quirky romance to London’s Garrick Theatre. This is the UK premiere of this musical.
The 1974 Oscar-nominated film of the same name inspired the show. Famous filmmaker and comedian Mel Brooks wrote the music and lyrics. He also wrote the book of the musical along with Thomas Meehan. Brooks also created hit West End musical The Producers.
Young Frankenstein re-imagines Mary Shelley’s classic horror story from the point of view of the grandson of Victor Frankenstein. The current generation of the Frankenstein family, Frederick, is a New York brain surgeon. He’s never been keen on his grandfather’s infamous legacy and would prefer people not to realise the family connection.
His feelings change when he reads his grandfather’s diaries and returns to the ancestral home. Accompanied by his sexy lab assistant Inga, the young Frankenstein sets about creating his own very unusual beast.
West End star Hadley Fraser leads the cast as Dr Frederick Frankenstein. Stand-up comedian Ross Noble, who previously starred in The Producers, joins him as Igor. Birds Of A Feathers’s Lesley Joseph plays housekeeper Frau Blucher. Musical theatre stars Dianne Pilkington, Summer Strallen and Patrick Clancey also star.
Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman directs this stage version of the bolted-together comedy. Beowulf Boritt provides the set design, with William Ivey Long designing costumes and Ben Cracknell designing the lighting.
The film version of Young Frankenstein starred Gene Wilder. Apparently when they created the film version, a huge number of takes were spoilt by Wilder cracking up laughing. We now dare you to keep a straight face when watching it on stage. We think it will be a monster hit.
Prior to arriving in the West End, the musical with have a short preview run at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle from 26 August – 9 September 2017.
Young Frankenstein runs at the Garrick Theatre from 28 September 2017 – 29 September 2018.
