About the show
Follow the true story of Mrs Orwell in this new play at Old Red Lion Theatre.
It’s famously said that behind every great man is a great woman. The world premiere of Tony Cox’s Mrs Orwell offers audiences the chance to see how much this applies to the author George Orwell and Sonia Brownell.
It is 1949. George has just published his now world famous novel 1984, but is beset by severe tuberculosis. Despite his ill-health, George’s ambition is to write another three books before he dies. In order to help him realise these goals, he proposes to his friend Sonia Brownell.
George’s proposal presents Sonia with a dilemma. Does she accept his offer and have a platonic relationship with the writer, or does she instead have a love affair with the great artist Lucian Freud?
Cressida Bonas takes the lead role alongside Peter Hamilton Dyer. Bonas was previously on the London stage in the immersive Gatsby at Leicester Square Theatre. The actress also previously dated Prince Harry. Dyer’s credits include performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe. Rosie Ede, Edmund Digby Jones and Robert Stocks join them in Mrs Orwell.
Theatre company Proud Haddock presents Mrs Orwell. The team have previously worked at Old Red Lion Theatre with A Naughty Night With Noel Coward in 2015. Their other work includes The Trackers Of Oxyrhynchus and A Subject Of Scandal And Concern, both of which they staged at Finborough Theatre.
Mrs Orwell runs from 1 – 26 August 2017 at Old Red Lion Theatre.
