About the show
Maureen Lipman directs the stage premiere of The Knowledge at Charing Cross Theatre.
Skilled with the Sat Nav or still using the A – Z? In the days of Google Maps, the old art of navigation is loosing its appeal. Not so for the best of London cabbies. Jack Rosenthal’s classic comedy The Knowledge follows four hapless candidates as they attempt to learn the famous ‘knowledge’ of a black cab driver.
The Knowledge takes place in 1979. As unemployment rates soar and making ends meet becomes harder, four Londoners decide to start training as black cab drivers. To pass the test and get the coveted ‘Green Badge’, they need to acquire ‘the knowledge’. Once they’ve got this, they’ll know the highways and alleyways of London town better than any modern Siri. Unfortunately for them, there’s a considerable obstacle in their way: Mr Burgess. Known as The Vampire, the fearsome instructor is determined not to let standards slip. Passing the test is not going to be easy.
Celebrated actor Maureen Lipman directs the world premiere of the stage version of Rosenthal’s film. Lipman originally starred in the 1979 film. She is also Rosenthal’s widow. Simon Block adapts the snappy comedy for the stage.
Steven Pacey leads the cast of The Knowledge as Mr Burgess. The Oliver Award-nominated actor was previously in the musical By Jeeves. Celine Abrahams, James Alexandrou, Jenna Augen, Louise Callaghan, Ben Caplan, Michael Chance, Alice Felgate and also Fabien Frankel join him in the show’s cast.
The Knowledge runs from 4 September – 11 November 2017 at Charing Cross Theatre.
