The White Bear Theatre is a cosy off-West End pub theatre in Kennington. Located above the White Bear pub, the theatre programmes dramas, comedies and tragedies. They are interested in revivals of classic plays and staging new writing.

The theatre runs the Lost Classics Project, a scheme that seeks to expand the variety of historic scripts being performed on stage today. Their work to date has included the first staging in modern times of the last play written by Ben Jonson.

Michael Kingsbury founded the theatre in 1988. Since then it has become a well-respected fringe venue with a number of successful transfers to its name. It regularly champions new playwrights and many now-famous names in the theatre business started out at the White Bear.

The White Bear Theatre was recently refurbished and is now fully air conditioned.

The White Bear Theatre is directly above the White Bear pub. They’re open before and after performances and serve food between 11am – 10pm Monday – Saturday, and 12pm – 9pm on Sundays. The menu focuses on seasonal produce and new twists on British classics. They also do a range of light bites that you can order before 6pm – perfect if you’re looking for a quick snack before heading upstairs. Youngs Brewery supplies the beer for the White Bear pub. They also stock a range of modern craft beers.
