About the show
Experience the magic of the English National Ballet’s Swan Lake at the London Coliseum.
The English National Ballet perform their mesmeric version of the classic ballet Swan Lake. Using romantic designs by Peter Farmer, the ENB dance the now-iconic choreography by Derek Deane, based on the original work of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Additional choreography is by the acclaimed Frederick Ashton.
When Prince Siegfried is out hunting, he discovers a flock of swans. As night falls, one of the swans transforms into the beautiful Odette. The prince is instantly enraptured with her, but their love can go nowhere as Odette is doomed by a curse to transform back into a swan each time the sun rises.
Von Rothbart, the evil spirit who has placed the curse on Odette, grows jealous of Siegfried’s love for her. He magically disguises his own daughter, Odile, as Odette, tricking Siegfried into loving the wrong woman. Siegfried’s fatal misstep ensures Odette’s curse is not broken, and she remains forever with the swans.
Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky composed Swan Lake in the 1870s. It had a bit of a bumpy start in terms of audience reception, but it is now considered one of the most popular ballets ever created. In 2017, the Royal Ballet premiered their new version using choreography by Liam Scarlett.
The English National Ballet are based at the London Coliseum along with the English National Opera. Tamara Rojo leads the company, which features some of the best dancers in the world.
