About the show
See Come From Away, the Tony Award-winning musical inspired by true events. The show about friendship and openness in the face of adversity runs at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End.
Following the events of 9/11, 7,000 air travellers were redirected to Newfoundland. Shocked and with nowhere to stay, the travellers did not know what to do. Though initially there were clashes of cultures and tensions were fraught, the inhabitants of a small town took them in. As trust grew, the newcomers and locals built friendships that would last a lifetime.
Come From Away was first staged at La Jolla Playhouse in May 2015. Following sell-out engagements and record-breaking runs across American and Canada, it premiered on Broadway in February 2017. Later that year, it earned seven Tony Award nominations, going on to win the award for Best Direction of a Musical.
Christopher Ashley, who won that award, returns to direct this UK production of Come From Away. The artistic director of La Jolla Playhouse, he previously directed shows such as Memphis and Xanadu.
Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the book, music and lyrics for Come From Away. Beowulf Boritt provides the show’s set design, while Toni-Leslie James creates the costumes. Lighting designer Howell Binkley and sound designer Gareth Owen complete the design team.
