World premiere of TINA, a new musical about the legendary Tina Turner, at the Aldwych Theatre.
TINA takes audiences back to the iconic singer’s early days growing up in Nutbush, Tennessee. Through grit, talent and determination, she became one of the best-selling artists in history, winning 11 Grammy Awards. TINA shows how she broke every rule there was in her quest to become world famous.
This new musical features many of Turner’s famous songs. These include Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits and also What’s Love Got To Do With It.
Adrienne Warren leads the cast in the title role. The US stage star previously appeared in Shuffle Along, Bring It On The Musical and Dreamgirls in New York.
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, who recently starred opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Hamlet, plays Ike Turner.
Madeline Appiah plays Zelma Bullock, while Aisha Jawando plays Tina’s sister Alline Bullock. Lorna Gayle, Tom Godwin, Francesca Jackson, Natey Jones, Gerard McCarthy and Ryan O’Donnell also star. Jammy Kasongo, Sia Kiwa, Jason Langley, Kayleigh McKnight, Baker Mukasa, Tanisha Spring, Derek Aidoo, Gavin Alex, Edward Bourne, Candace Furbert, Hannah Jay-Allan and Rodney Vubya complete the adult cast. Jenny Fitzpatrick is the alternate Tina.
Created in collaboration with the musical legend herself, TINA uses the book by Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins. Phyllida Lloyd directs this world premiere production.
Lloyd has history directing musicals featuring the back catalogue of music royalty. She also directed hit musical Mamma Mia! That show is still running 18 years later. More recently, Lloyd was behind an acclaimed trilogy of Shakespeare plays for the Donmar Warehouse starring an all-female cast.
Katori Hall’s wrote the Oliver Award-winning The Mountaintop, about Martin Luther King. Opening in 2009, the play transferred for West End and Broadway runs.
Anthony Van Laast, who previously worked with Lloyd on Mamma Mia!, reunites with the director for this show. He recently worked on Disney’s live remake of Beauty And The Beast.
Mark Thompson designs both the set and the costumes. He has previously won five Olivier Awards for his work on shows including Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
