About the show

Hit musical Wicked carries on Defying Gravity to bring a spellbinding tale of friendship and sorcery to London theatre.

Thought you knew the story of The Wizard Of Oz? Think again. When Dorothy defeated the Wicked Witch of the West, we only heard one side of the tale. This multi-award-winning musical recreates the magical world of Oz and shows us a different story – what it’s like to grow up as a witch!

The story of an unlikely friendship between two girls, Wicked focuses on the beautiful, popular Glinda and misunderstood green-skinned girl Elphaba who meet studying sorcery at Shiz University.

When the girls meet the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their lives take very different paths. Glinda is determined to become loved and popular, while Elphaba decides to stay true to her principles. It’s a decision that might lead to her downfall.

In a show filled with tears and laughter, you discover how the two girls went on to fulfil their destinies and become known as Glinda The Good and The Wicked Witch of the West.

Alice Fearn leads the London cast as Elphaba. Fearn originally joined the cast as Standby Elphaba in 2016. Her previous London credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Shrek The Musical

Former Over The Rainbow contestant Sophie Evans plays Glinda opposite Fearn. Andy Hockley takes on the role of The Wizard, while Melanie La Barrie plays Madame Morrible. Bradley Jaden plays Fiyero and Sarah McNicholas plays Nessarose, while Jack Lansbury plays Boq.

From 23 July, David Witts replaces Bradley Jaden in the role of Fiyero. Witts previously played Joey Branning in EastEnders and has recently been living and working in Los Angeles. On the same day, Chris Jarman steps into the role of Doctor Dillamond, while current cast member Rosa O’Reilly takes over as Nessarose.

Based on a novel by Gregory Maguire’s novel, the musical opened on Broadway in 2003. It transferred to London in 2006 and is now one of the West End’s longest running shows. It has twice won the Olivier Awards’ Audience Award.

Stephen Schwartz wrote the music for Wicked. Since the show’s US debut, his songs have become some of the most loved in all musical theatre. Wicked’s songs include Popular, For Good and the anthemic Defying Gravity.
