About the show

It’s the *cough cough* West End transfer of James Graham’s Quiz to the Noel Coward Theatre.

Quite possibly the most prolific West End playwright in recent memory, James Graham is at it again. This time with a West End transfer for Quiz.

Premiering at the Chichester Festival Theatre in November 2017, this show is a fictionalised retelling of the story of Charles Ingram, the famous ‘coughing major’ on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

Charles Ingram made headlines when he was put on trial for cheating on the television game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. Graham’s play intricately re-examines the story, whilst also considering our national obsession with television quizzes, celebrities and those in the dock.

There’s plenty of food for thought here. Not least how this willingness to be flexible with the truth links to recent world events such as the rise of so-called ‘fake news’.

This isn’t to say Graham is pointing a finger at quiz shows. Quiz is both a provocative exploration of the entertainment genre and a celebration of this very British pastime.

Keir Charles and Gavin Spokes lead the cast as Chris Tarrant and Charles Ingram. Greg Haiste, Mark Meadows, Henry Pettigrew, Stephanie Street, Jay Villiers, Lizzie Winkler and also Sarah Woodward reprise the roles they played in Chichester. Sharon Ballard joins the show for its London season.

Daniel Evans directs the production. Previously at Sheffield Theatres, Evans is the current Artistic Director at the Chichester Festival Theatre. His previous work includes a West End production of David Mamet’s American Buffalo.

Programmed for a strictly limited 12-week season, Quiz follows James Graham’s previous West End hits. These include This House, Ink and Labour Of Love.

Find out more about the production in our interview with Stephanie Street.

We say: don’t phone a friend, just go.

Quiz runs from 31 March – 16 June 2018 at Noel Coward Theatre.
