See Tennessee Williams’ Summer And Smoke as the hit Almeida Theatre production transfers to the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre.
Mississippi, the early 1900s. Alma Winemiller, the daughter of a minister, falls for the boy who grew up next door, John Buchanan Jr. But they’re so different. Can they find a way for their relationship to work?
Patsy Ferran reprises her acclaimed performance as Alma. The winner of both the Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award and the Evening Standard Emerging Talent Award, her stage credits include My Mum’s A Twat (Royal Court Theatre) and Treasure Island (National Theatre).
Matthew Needham also returns to the production to play John Buchanan. Needham previously worked on Almeida Theatre productions, The Twilight Zone and The Treatment. He has also performed regularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe.
Seb Carrington, Nancy Crane, Eric MacLennan, Forbes Masson, Tok Stephen and Anjana Vasan complete the cast.
American writer Tennessee Williams is one of the world’s greatest playwrights. In addition to Summer And Smoke, his plays include A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. Williams won the Pulitzer Prize twice.
Rebecca Frecknall directs Summer And Smoke. She was previously Resident Director on the Almeida Theatre’s production of Ink.
This production of Summer And Smoke features a gun shot and the smoking of real cigarettes on stage.
It is produced in the West End by the Almeida Theatre and Sonia Friedman Productions.
Summer And Smoke runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre from 10 November to 19 January.
