About the show

Aidan Turner stars in The Lieutenant Of Inishmore at the Noel Coward Theatre.

Poldark’s Aidan Turner performs as Mad Padraic in this West End revival of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant Of Inishmore. The darkly unsettling comedy casts the sharpest of satirical eyes over what happens when violence becomes normalised and terrorism takes over.

Mad Padraic is a cat-loving terrorist deemed too unhinged for the IRA. Midway through torturing a petty criminal, Padraic is informed that his beloved cat, Wee Thomas, has been taken ill. Leaving his torture assignment behind, Padraic returns to his home island of Inishmore. On arrival, he realises that Wee Thomas hasn’t had an accident: he’s the victim of a brutal attack. Contorted with anger, Padraic commits to a plan of total revenge.

The Lieutenant Of Inishmore’s action takes place in 1993. The Royal Shakespeare Company premiered McDonagh’s play in 2001. Notoriously violent, but also extremely funny, this one isn’t for the fain- hearted. If, however, you can stomach a fair amount of gore, it’s well worth catching this modern classic.

Turner makes his West End debut in this production. He previously appeared in shows including Romeo And Juliet and A Cry From Heaven at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. His TV work includes Desperate Romantics, Being Human and, of course, Poldark. On the big screen he starred in The Hobbit films and The Mortal Instruments. In 2016 he earned the title GQ Actor of the Year.

Award-winning actress Charlie Murphy stars alongside Turner in the production. Denis Conway, Will Irvine, Brian Martin, Daryl McCormack, Julian Moore-Cook and also Chris Walley complete the cast.

Michael Grandage directs the production. He was previously the Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse in London. In 2013, Grandage directed an award-winning production of McDonagh’s The Cripple Of Inishmaan, which starred Daniel Radcliffe.

Along with the The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, the Michael Grandage Company is also staging John Logan’s Red at Wyndham’s Theatre from 4 May 2018.

Suitable for audience members aged 16 and over.

The Lieutenant Of Inishmore runs from 23 June – 8 September 2018 at the Noel Coward Theatre.
