About the show
The Little Matchgirl And Other Happier Tales returns to Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe’s indoor theatre.
Following its premiere at the theatre for Christmas 2016, The Little Matchgirl And Other Happier Tales returns to Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Emma Rice directs the poignant tale that closes the Winter Selection season.
Adapted by Joel Horwood in collaboration with Rice, The Little Matchgirl And Other Happier Tales weaves together Hans Christian Anderson’s sorrow-filled story with a collection of other well-known fairy tales. Audiences can expect to be swept into the regal and hilarious world of The Emperor’s New Clothes, the bruised and bumpy bedroom of The Princess And The Pea, and the miniaturised life of Thumbelina.
When The Little Matchgirl And Other Happier Tales debuted at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse last Christmas, it received lots of festive good cheer. WhatsOnStage gave it five stars and called it “an out-and-out triumph”. The Guardian, Telegraph, Times and Financial Times all gave it four stars.
The show returns to London as part of a UK tour.
