Introducing… Circa’s Peepshow

Yaron Lifschitz tells us more about Peepshow, the voyeuristic new show from Australian circus company, Circa.

“Every morning, when we put on our clothes, many of us think about how we will look to other people. For some of us, this will change the clothes we wear.

“The way we look and act in the world is shaped by knowing we’re being looked at. It’s this experience that is at the heart of Peepshow.

“Traditionally, peep shows are where men go to look at women for sexual gratification. While our Peepshow is sexy, it’s not that type of peep show.

“It is, however, about looking and being seen. We invite you to watch our circus artists, who know you are watching them. You’ll see images of mirrors and you’ll see people trapped in shafts of light. You’ll watch as acrobats move in and out of darkness, and see fresh perspectives on traditional acts.

“Circa’s Peepshow is playful, funny, a bit surreal, sexy and, like all Circa’s work, is   based on an ensemble of artists, and the magic and energy they create together.

“It is the latest show in our post-cabaret adventure. These shows blend cabaret with Circa’s usual medium of circus, add some extra ingredients (in Peepshow’s case a nightclub, a dream and ideas of looking) and shake. They shake so hard things break, stick together and turn wonderfully weird. The resulting cocktail is a fantasia designed to thrill and delight.

“We’ve had the great pleasure of working with our friends at Underbelly Festival for many years. Every time we come, we bring a new show that explores new thoughts and ideas, featuring new artists mixed with some familiar faces. Peepshow is no different!

“I hope that Peepshow is one of those shows which is able to transform people’s expectations. I hope it offers new sensibilities with unexpected pleasures, and also bridges the world between art and entertainment.”

Circa’s Peepshow runs at Underbelly Festival from 27 June to 18 August.
